What is lightning protection in reinforced concrete construction – and why is it important?

  • Protection against personal injury, fires and surge damage
  • Discharge of lightning currents of up to 200,000 amps
  • Prevention of potential differences in the building
  • Standards: DIN EN 62305, DIN 18014, VDE 0100-540

Lightning protection systems protect buildings and people from the extreme energies of a lightning strike. In reinforced concrete construction, the foundation area is particularly suitable for safely diverting lightning currents into the ground. The current is conducted via interception systems and down conductors into the earthing system, where it is safely dispersed. Without professional lightning protection, there is a risk of fires, power failures, surge damage and life-threatening voltages.

What does the earthing system do – and how does it complement lightning protection?

  • Connection of electrical systems to the ground
  • Protection against electric shocks in the event of fault currents
  • Basis for equipotential bonding
  • Standards: DIN 18014, VDE 0100-540

The earthing system is the basis for electrical safety in buildings. It connects all conductive parts and devices to the ground and ensures that fault currents are discharged in a controlled manner. In this way, it protects people and technology from dangerous voltages. In reinforced concrete construction, earthing is usually achieved via a foundation or ring earth electrode – supplemented by connection lugs, terminals and wall bushings.

Which MASTERTEC products are used?

  • Earthing straps and round wires (galvanised or V4A)
  • Fixed earthing terminals (M10–M16) for equipotential bonding
  • Earthing wall bushings – also pressure-water-tight with sealing collars
  • Clamps & connectors for flat and round conductors
  • Earth rods & spacers for special solutions

MASTERTEC offers a complete range of products for lightning protection and earthing in reinforced concrete construction. Our earthing conductors and fixed points enable a secure connection to the reinforcement and the lightning protection system. Pre-assembled wall bushings with wall collars ensure a pressure-water-tight passage through concrete components. With tested clamps and connectors, all components can be reliably integrated – in accordance with standards and practical requirements.

What needs to be considered during planning and installation?

  • Planning by a lightning protection or electrical specialist
  • Installation before concreting
  • Documentation with photos and test reports
  • Compliance with separation distances and standards

The planning of a lightning protection and earthing system should be carried out at an early stage – ideally by a qualified specialist. Installation must be completed before concreting, as subsequent changes are time-consuming and expensive. DIN 18014 requires complete documentation, including photographic evidence and measurement reports. MASTERTEC provides support in this area with advice and suitable products.
