What is formwork oil?

Formwork oil is used in concrete construction to treat the formwork in order to prevent the fresh concrete from adhering to the formwork surface.

What types of formwork oil are there?

A distinction is made between:

  • Water-soluble and water-insoluble,
  • Solvent-based and solvent-free
  • Mineral oil and vegetable oil-based

formwork oil.

The most commonly used concrete release agents in construction technology are mineral oil-based. However, the demand for vegetable oil-based concrete release agents is increasing, as they are more environmentally friendly and pose less of a health risk.

Why is formwork oil used?

Applying the formwork oil to the formwork facing reduces its ability to absorb water and prevents adhesion between the concrete and the formwork. The use of a concrete release agent increases the service life of the formwork, as it can be removed more easily. The formwork oil also protects the formwork from corrosion and weathering. It should be noted that the formwork oil also affects the concrete surface. The selection of the right concrete release agent therefore depends not only on the absorbency of the formwork facing, but also on the required surface quality of the concrete.

Our universal release agent "LIDOL" is suitable for all common types of formwork.

How do you apply formwork oil?

Formwork oil can be applied by spraying, rolling or brushing. The most economical method is to use a formwork oil sprayer, as the concrete release agent should be applied as thinly and evenly as possible. Too much release agent should be avoided as it negatively affects the quality of the surface.
